That is the one consistent place S&W put the serial #. The other numbers can be, and usually are, simply assembly numbers that have no meaning after leaving the factory. admin and Oldgungeezer. It has 4 Screws in the frame and an unsupported Ejector Rod. It has no Model Number. Any information would be a great help!
The serial is also stamped on the breech face of the cylinder and under the barrel on the extractor rod flat. If all those serials match, it is in its original configuration. These guns are fun to shoot if you can find .38 Special ammo anywhere. The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact.
