It can be done without removing the transmission, but you will have to remove the rear cover to access it. While in there it may be a good time to change the axle tube bearings. Then remove the rear plate on the rear. You will lose all your fluid when you do this. Rotate the axle shaft until a oblong cutout appears which will allow access to the clip on the end of the axle.
