For hotter loads I use 2400 and for much hotter loads I use 4198 or RL7. This load has been around for more then 50 yrs. Use it with a 300gr cast for varmints and kids plinking in any 45-70 that is tight and safe to shoot including the original civil war era trap doors. You have to match the powder for the job. There is no one-fitzall out there. Been there done this for 50+ years.

Powders burn best within their own particular pressure range. The 45-70 would not be able to achieve 4350's ideal pressure level with a cast boolit.

Larger 5744 doses can be used for strong actions, but I usually go with other powders for stiff loads.
