I have an 01 duramax that I recently replaced headgaskets in. Shortly after the headgasket job a ticking noise appeared. I think it sounds like a lifter ticking. Possibly a lifter loosened up a little after it has been running. A friend of mine disagrees. He says it is injectors ticking because they are bad. I have no other symptoms.

It does not sound like necessarily coming from the engine but in the front loser to the grill. Before I take it in and have looked at, I thought I would get someones opinion. I had the oil pan (pacific performance engineering pan )because original pan drain plug is too high and all oil don't drain out. now the noise is gone, I'm thinking the oil pick tube up was hitting the bottom of pan.

The Typewriter tick has been in all the Duramax engines.. As the engines get quieter the noise becomes more prominent. Some people do find different brand oil seems to quieten the noise some but experimentation is key for some because not all oils act the same in all engines..
