It can raise and lower your stats (level, strength, defence, speed, etc.) from 1-5 points. It can also change your pet's gender, colour, and of course, species.

The Lab Ray can do numerous things such as increasing stats, decreasing stats, changing the pet’s species or nothing at all. It works randomly that is why the player is unable to select what it does. On the contrary, the Neopets Lab Ray is unable to change the color of your pet to the following color such as Pirate, Baby, Plushie, Royal ...The Lab Ray is completely random. There is really no such thing as luck. I once spent close to 3 weeks zapping a pet without any notable color change. I ultimately pounded the pet and gave up. After almost 2 months of daily Neopets, I finally complete secret lab map and petpet lab map! It seems daunting at first, but I like the idea of randomize pet/color and I don't have anything set in mind for my 3rd pet. Once I found a pet in the pound with name that I like, I started this goal in action.

The lab ray is random get the one you want in 22 days but takes forever for my grarrl. I think the best move is to go into it with zero expectations. The biggest disappointment comes from wanting a specific species and color, and there’s some people on here who have zapped for years to get their dream pet.
