A wicked edge system is something like $300-1200 dollars and it's bulky. You can get to shaving sharp with 2 stones and some newspaper in under 10 minutes. No, you can't lather with your fingers. At least not very well. A good lather is a mixture of soap, water, and air. Your fingers just aren't as good at stirring up that mixture as a brush is. That said, you don't need a lather. There are some decent of non-lathering creams out there.
