Check your difficulties options, there should be something about it that you have to turn on if you want it. Turn on Remove negative effects upon rest from difficulty settings. Bleh. Ability score damage isn't a big issue. Numerous different classes can learn the lesser restoration spell early which will cure it a few points at a time and scrolls and potions for it are also sold by merchants.
