The US Patrol had been in the area, driving over swamps, grassland, mud, thick sand, etc. for about 4 days (IIRC) when the ambush happened. There was originally a rotary wing element which was supposed to join them during their visit to Tongo Tongo, however the rotary wing element had to stand down due to bad weather.
